Understand the basics of Sokoban

Take a moment with Sokoban before moving to another game. Push every crate onto a target. Choose a clear next step rather than rushing through the instructions. Check the rule that explains your first action. Look at what changes after your first action.

Push two crates onto their targets in compact 7×7 rooms. The starting layouts can be solved; an unhelpful push may still trap a crate.

Try a more deliberate round

Choose one rule to keep in mind for this round. Apply it consistently rather than guessing what another version might allow. Notice the feedback after each input.

What counts as success

Push every crate onto a target. An attractive position is not enough unless the goal is met. Return to the instructions when a step is unclear.

The order of play

  1. Move through empty floor.
  2. Push one crate into empty space.
  3. Never pull or push two at once.
  4. Undo a deadlock and continue.

Input guidance

Arrow keys or direction buttons. Use the control method described here for this activity. Use one clear input at a time.

Learn from a sample situation

A crate in a non-target corner cannot be recovered by pulling. Focus on why the action is allowed, not only its outcome. Look for the relevant detail.

A mistake to avoid

Consider the player’s access behind crates. Compare the situation with the worked example. Read one step at a time and try it on the playing area. Match the instruction to the control you use.
