Your guide to Shikaku

Open Shikaku, check the instructions and begin a round. Cover the board with non-overlapping rectangles, each containing one clue equal to its area. Check the relevant rule before repeating a move. Compare the starting position with the example in the Guide. Use the example below to understand a decision.

Solve ten 5×5 rectangle puzzles. Each clue belongs to exactly one rectangle of the stated area.

Practice with a purpose

Watch the feedback after an action. A message can explain whether the input was accepted or whether a rule needs attention. Make the next step deliberately.

Understand the aim

Cover the board with non-overlapping rectangles, each containing one clue equal to its area. An attractive position is not enough unless the goal is met. Return to the instructions when a step is unclear.

The order of play

  1. Choose a rectangle’s opposite corners.
  2. It must contain one clue and have the matching area.
  3. Click an existing rectangle to remove it.
  4. Cover every square to finish.

Getting comfortable with the controls

Click or tap squares or graph edges. Number boards include a digit pad. Undo reverses the previous change; Check puzzle validates the solution. Use the control method described here for this activity. Contact us with the game and device if a control does not respond.

See the idea in action

A clue 6 may occupy a 2×3 rectangle when other clues allow it. Compare this with the rule that governs the move. Look for the relevant detail.

One detail worth checking

No rectangle may contain two clues or overlap another. A different version of the game may use a different rule. Before your first action, say what you are trying to achieve. Then compare the result with the goal.
