Mahjong Solitaire: from controls to your first round

Take a moment with Mahjong Solitaire before moving to another game. Remove all forty layered tiles in matching pairs. Use the example below to understand a decision. Choose a comfortable screen position before beginning. Keep the game area visible while you use its controls.

Match number-marked tiles in a compact layered layout. The starting arrangement has a complete removal route, but your choices can still block later pairs.

One thing to notice as you play

Compare the worked example with your own position. Use the reasoning, not an answer copied from a different board. Keep the objective visible.

Your objective

Remove all forty layered tiles in matching pairs. Use the instructions to see which actions move you towards it. Try to explain the aim in your own words.

How a round unfolds

  1. Choose a tile with no covering tile and a free left or right side.
  2. Choose a matching free tile.
  3. Uncover lower layers.
  4. Use hints or undo.

Making selections and moves

Tap two free matching tiles. Read a button’s label before selecting it. Look at the feedback after the action.

A closer look at one example

Equal symbols cannot pair while one is covered. Apply the same reasoning to the position in your own round. Read the matching step again.

Avoid this misunderstanding

Layer and side access matter as well as symbol matching. Check the rule before repeating the action. When a decision goes wrong, compare it with the common mistake described below. Start again only when you intend to leave the current round.
